What is ritual?

A ritual is a set of actions, gestures, and spoken or unspoken words that are performed in a predetermined and often repetitive sequence. Rituals are usually conducted for a specific purpose, such as to commemorate an event, to seek spiritual guidance or protection, to express gratitude, or to mark a transition or milestone.

Rituals can be performed individually or collectively, with participants often sharing a common belief or faith. They can range from simple and personal acts, such as lighting a candle or reciting a prayer, to elaborate ceremonies with multiple participants and complex rituals.

Rituals often contain symbols and objects that are imbued with meaning, such as sacred texts, incense, or crystals, which are used to create a special atmosphere and invoke spiritual or emotional responses.

Through repetition and adherence to tradition, rituals can also serve to reinforce cultural identity and social cohesion. They can provide a sense of order and comfort, and connect us to something greater than ourselves.
