What is nissart?

Nissart is a dialect of the Occitan language that is spoken in Nice and the surrounding areas of southeastern France. It is also sometimes referred to as "Niçard" or "Nissart Occitan".

Nissart has a long history and has been spoken in the region for centuries. It has been influenced by various other languages over time, including Italian, Ligurian, and French.

The dialect has its own unique vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation that sets it apart from other Occitan dialects. It is also characterized by its use of the feminine gender in the plural form of nouns, and by the frequent use of word-initial consonant clusters.

Today, Nissart is still spoken by some people in the Nice region, but it is considered endangered, with less than 200,000 speakers worldwide. Efforts are being made to preserve and promote the language, including through language classes and cultural events.
