What is nagamaki?

Nagamaki is a type of Japanese sword characterized by its long handle and slender blade, typically measuring over 60 centimeters in length. The blade of a nagamaki is single-edged and curved, similar to a traditional katana, but with a longer and narrower profile. The handle of a nagamaki is also longer than that of a katana, usually measuring around 50 centimeters in length.

Nagamaki were traditionally used by samurai warriors during the feudal period of Japan, primarily as a weapon for horseback combat. The long handle of the nagamaki allowed the wielder to have greater reach and leverage in battle, making it effective for slashing and thrusting attacks.

The design of the nagamaki evolved from earlier polearm weapons such as the naginata, and it was considered a versatile and effective weapon on the battlefield. However, as firearms became more prevalent in warfare, the nagamaki fell out of use and is now primarily seen as a historical curiosity or a decorative piece.

In modern times, nagamaki are sometimes used in martial arts demonstrations and as part of traditional Japanese ceremonies. They are also popular among collectors and enthusiasts of Japanese weaponry for their unique design and historical significance.
