What is muruga?

Muruga (also known as Kartikeya or Skanda) is a popular Hindu deity worshipped mainly in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu. He is regarded as the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, and his birth story is found in various Hindu texts.

As per the mythology, Muruga was born with six faces and twelve arms, and was given the task of leading the army of the gods to defeat the demon Tarakasura. He is considered to be a brave warrior, riding on a peacock and wielding a spear or Vel.

Muruga is also associated with wisdom, education, and knowledge, and is often worshipped as a patron of students and intellectuals. He is often depicted with a book and a pen in his hands, sitting on his pet peacock.

In Tamil Nadu, the festival of Thaipusam is dedicated to Muruga, and is celebrated with great fervour, especially at the Murugan Temples in Palani and Tirupparankundram. Devotees pierce their skin with hooks and carry heavy Kavadis (decorated structures) as a form of penance and to seek blessings from the deity.
