Divergent is a science fiction young adult novel written by Veronica Roth. It was published in 2011 and is the first book in a trilogy. The story takes place in a dystopian society where people are divided into five factions based on their virtues: Abnegation (selfless), Candor (honest), Erudite (intellectual), Amity (peaceful) and Dauntless (brave). The protagonist, Beatrice Prior, must decide which faction to join when she turns 16, but her test results are inconclusive, indicating that she is divergent and does not fit into any one faction. This discovery puts her in danger as the divergence is seen as a threat to the structured society. The novel explores themes of identity, conformity, choice, and rebellion. The book was adapted into a successful movie franchise starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James.
