What is 川建国?

川建国, or "Chuan Jianguo" (literally "Trump Builds the Nation"), is a nickname given to Donald Trump by some Chinese internet users.

It's essentially an ironic and somewhat humorous moniker based on the idea that Trump's policies, although ostensibly aimed at benefiting the United States, were actually weakening the country and inadvertently helping China's rise on the global stage. Therefore, in a twisted way, he was "building" China.

The term gained popularity during Trump's presidency. Common justifications for the nickname included:

 • His trade war with China, which some believed ultimately harmed the US economy more than China's.
 • His withdrawal from international agreements, such as the Paris Agreement, which created a vacuum for China to assume a leadership role in global affairs.
 • Perceived division and social unrest within the United States during his presidency, which painted the US in a less favorable light compared to China.

The nickname should be viewed as a satirical commentary on US-China relations and a reflection of differing perspectives on Trump's impact on the global balance of power. It does not necessarily reflect the official stance of the Chinese government, but rather an opinion among certain segments of the Chinese online community.
