What is tomt?

Tomt is a Swedish word that translates to "the plot" or "the empty space" in English. In Scandinavian folklore, it refers to a supernatural creature similar to a gnome or elf, believed to live in the forest and protect the family and home of the people living nearby. The tomt is usually depicted as a small, bearded man wearing a hat and colorful clothes, often depicted carrying a lantern or a small sack. The tomt is also associated with the winter solstice and the Yule season, and is said to bring good luck and blessings to those who treat him with respect and kindness. Today, the tomt remains an important part of Scandinavian culture and folklore.
