What is serinethinae?

Serinethinae is a subfamily of beetles (family Dermestidae) commonly known as skin or hide beetles. They are found worldwide and are known for their ability to feed on animal products such as skins, hides, feathers, and dried animal carcasses. Some species are considered pests because they can cause damage to museum specimens, taxidermy, and historical artifacts. Others, however, are valuable in forensic investigations, as they can help establish the postmortem interval of cadavers by indicating the presence and sequence of insect activity. Serinethinae include over 80 species, with the most diverse genera being Dermestes and Necrobia. They are typically small to medium-sized, oval-shaped beetles with brown or black coloration and a pattern of hairs or scales on their wings.
