What is cross-stone?

Cross-stone, also known as khachkar, is a traditional Armenian Christian symbol carved on stones, which originated in the 4th century. The khachkars are often located in Armenian monasteries, churches, and cemeteries, but can also be found in public places and historical sites across Armenia and abroad. The cross-stones are carved with intricate geometrical designs, images of saints, biblical scenes, and sometimes inscriptions. These carvings are considered as a unique art form and represent the cultural identity of the Armenian people. In 2010, khachkar making was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as an essential part of the Armenian cultural heritage.
